Joel Stanley is a Rock Star

ORION, Mich. — The new rock stars of the auto industry aren't producing the quickest sports coupes or the sleekest sedans.

They are the handful of high-tech companies racing to develop a new breed of a historically unsexy product, the battery, that is revolutionizing the way that vehicles work.

One of them is Cobasys, located in this Detroit suburb. The company makes batteries that power today's gas-electric hybrid vehicles, such as the Saturn Vue. But it is also jointly developing the next wave of batteries, those that will be needed for plug-in hybrids, which can recharge overnight from a wall socket.

"This is one of the bright spots in the auto industry today," says Cobasys CEO Thomas Neslage.

Unlike most automakers, some of the battery makers have a distinctly high-tech sheen. They're growing fast in a field where technology advances by the day, making products that are a leap beyond the lead-acid batteries that have started cars and trucks for decades. And their customers are begging for more.

Cobasys' focus has been on making the nickel-metal hydride batteries that are the mainstay of most hybrids. They provide enough juice to power vehicles at slower speeds, allow the car's internal-combustion engines to shut off at intersections, and are partially recharged when a car's brakes are applied.

But many see the holy grail as the lithium-ion battery, technology that powers many personal electronic devices and will make plug-in hybrids practical.

Research is focused on making battery packs for cars that would be compact, dependable and cheap. They also must be durable: Automakers want them to last at least 10 years before they need to be replaced.

It's that promise that's making high-tech battery makers into industry darlings, at least in the eyes of:

• Clamoring automakers. Two weeks ago, General Motors rolled out the hit of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, a plug-in hybrid concept car called the Chevrolet Volt. The car was billed as being able to travel up to 40 miles on an overnight charge, more than the nation's average daily commuting distance, before needing its gasoline engine.

But GM was quick to add that the decision on whether to build the Volt rests entirely on whether battery technology advances. GM is pitting Cobasys and another battery maker, A123Systems, against the team of Johnson Controls and Saft Advanced Power Solutions in developing lithium-ion power for the next-generation Saturn Vue, a plug-in hybrid which could be the forerunner to a production Volt.

Other automakers are in the race as well. DaimlerChrysler is placing 20 Dodge Sprinter vans with plug-in hybrid systems into corporate or government fleets through next year. Ford Motor has built a prototype plug-in hybrid version of its Edge crossover SUV that also has a hydrogen fuel cell. Toyota has said it's developing its own plug-in hybrid.

Supportive government. For the second consecutive year, President Bush, in his State of the Union address Tuesday, cited the development of plug-in hybrids as an important budding solution to weaning the USA off imported oil.

Government is kicking in. Two lithium-ion battery makers, A123 and Detroit's Compact Power, recently won grants totaling $21.3 million from the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium, a partially government-funded research group for Detroit's automakers, GM, Ford and Chrysler Group.

Anxious investors. The money is flowing. A123 announced Thursday that it has received another $40 million in private financing, bringing total investment so far to $102 million. The fast-growing Watertown, Mass., company is thinking of an initial public offering when it deems the time to be right. "It shocked the battery world that a start-up could create game-changing technology and launch it in such a short period of time," A123 CEO David Vieau says.

Cobasys says parent Chevron, which has joint ownership with Energy Conversion Devices, has invested $230 million so far. Cobasys has grown from 34 employees five years ago to nearly 400 today.

Compact Power hasn't been hurting for attention, either. "There is heightened interest from equity groups wanting to participate," CEO Prabhakar Patil says.

Of course, there are risks. Like any emerging technology, the race to find the best solution may turn out to be an unorthodox approach. Silicon Valley start-up Tesla Motors is bundling 6,831 rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, like the ones used in laptop computers, as the heart of the $92,000 electric roadster it expects to start delivering next year.

Tesla says the plug-in car should go from 0 to 60 mph in about 4 seconds. Its charge will last up to 250 miles of driving, the company promises.

But that's in the future. Even with today's technology, Cobasys is trying to keep up with demand for nickel-metal hydride batteries. Its headquarters here is supposed to be mostly a development facility, but demand is so high that it's being used for production while a new factory in Springboro, Ohio, ramps up.

The company makes about 400,000 cells a year, the Lego-like plastic-covered rectangles about the size of a carton of cigarettes that are literally the building blocks of a hybrid battery. It hopes to increase production to 3 million by 2009. The number of these cells that go into a hybrid battery varies. When 24 are packaged together, they produce a wallop equal to a 120-horsepower gas engine over a five- to 10-second burst. "Think of the battery as a fuel tank," Neslage says.

The tricky part is getting all those cells to work together as a single unit. That's Cobasys' specialty — and the role it's playing in its partnership with A123 focused on the lithium-ion batteries. A123 makes battery packs for Black and Decker power tools at present.

Besides cars, Cobasys' units are being tested in delivery vans and military haulers. And Neslage hopes to crack the market for buses and trash trucks as well, stop-and-go vehicles that lend themselves to the advantages of hybrids.

And someday, if everything works out, maybe GM's plug-in hybrid models as well.

Kevin's 40th

We had such a great time last night. Thanks to everyone who made it up there! He was pleasantly surprised. Especially since I'm not good at organizing anything. I had huge help from our favorite barmaid, and friend, Karyn, up at the box. She did the decorating for us. love her!

Some pics from last night:

Kevin when we first got there. The medallion says something like "better with age" (it's out in a bag in the car and it's too cold to go check it)

A couple of the balloons Karyn put up:

And lastly, Kevin at the end of the night after about 6 shots and 4 pitchers of beer lol:

Again we had such a good time! Didn't even mind getting our butts kicked in darts by Lady J and her friends.

He's still sleeping it off. After we came home we had MORE beer as we watched a special on Bukowski. He's gotta work today @ 3pm for a couple hours, then who knows. We are gonna try to get up to corktown to see ROADHOG.

And if you missed the party and are in the area, don't forget we're having a Superbowl/kevin's 40th on Feb 4th starting around 4PM (game starts around 6PM)

Regarding American Idol

Okay, so we all know it's too soon to make any judgements. I mean, they aren't even showing us half of the contestants that are making it thru. And frankly I"m not too keen on those "bad singing" montages they have each night. Too canned for me.

I do get a kick out of how almost everyone, when they're rejected, says "let me sing another song" and then just starts singing regardless of what the judges have said.

And the old standby bad singer telling Simon "well that's your opinion" ... UMMM... YEA!!! You knew getting into this that if you wanted to move forward you had to get HIS opinion! DUH!!!

So as of right now, my favorites are the Jesus/fidel looking dude, Sundance, Thomas Daniel (guy with the fro from Seattle), the Indian brother and sister from Seattle, JOrdin Sparks, the really tall chick from Seattle (yea...I'm not really good with names right now), and the really cute latino guy ... i think he was from venezuela or something like that and I think he auditioned in Minneapolis.

We got more auditions tonight. Should be an interesting couple of hours.

AND!!! If you like American Idol, you really should check out Grease: You're the One that I want on NBC Sunday nights. They've narrowed it down to 6 girls and 6 guys who are singing on live TV shows starting this Sunday for the chance to be the leads in the next Broadway production of Grease! I have my faves there too.

Week in Review (part 2)

Joel and I spent alot of time talking about his weight loss, Plans with Bobbi when she comes to the states and their wedding etc.

I'm so proud of him. I guess Bobbie wanted him to lose weight before they got married and that was the incentive he needed to get to his physician and get on a plan. essentially the plan is some purchased products (shakes and entrees) and all the water you can drink combined with getting x amount of exercise a day (nothing outrageous tho...for Joel it's 210 calories burned a day which he measures out with his pedometer) He's drinking something like 100 oz. of water a day. HE says he feels like he's constantly eating or drinking. That's good tho.

I was sharing things that I've heard and he was sharing things he's been told, and they match up. Like, for instance, oftentimes when you think you are hungry, you're really thirsty and should drink water and it will get rid of that feeling. You should also try and eat every 4 hours or so. Sometimes people's problems are that they eat too little (and that is SO me!). He still has a ways to go to reach his goal weight, but if he continues on the way he's going he should reach it by the time Bobbie is approved and ready to come over to the states.

So when we left the buffet (totally stuffed on sushi and soup), we went to Dunham's and Joel got me a pedometer...the same one he's been using. I didn't use it until yesterday cuz my weekend was pretty slothly, but I have been drinking the water and, aside from having to use the bathroom all day, I'm feeling better. It's only been a couple days, but hopefully I'll at least keep up with the walking around the house and drinking water. I can add other stuff later once I see I can stick to this for awhile.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Joel's wedding plans deserve a whole blog themselves. Let's just say he's trying to incorporate as much of the Chinese traditions in to it as possible for Bobbie. Which thrills me. I love the whole Wedding Banquet tradition. Only difficulty may be the menu since, due to traditions, they often serve lobster, whole roast suckling pig, amongst others.
I have spoken to Bobbie and emailed her (altho not recently) and I really like her. I'm so excited for him!
Saturday night we went to Somewhere bar and no grill in Wyandotte to meet up with RHS alums, sing and have some adult beverages. SO MUCH FUN!!!!
Elizabeth was there, of course, and Mark Brown and his wife Heather, me and Kevin and Elizabeth's beau Les was running karaoke. There was also another alum but I can't remember his name (i'm sorry ) he was so cool tho cuz he likes Bruce campbell!! You are automatically cool when you like Bruce Campbell.
Which, btw, led to the funniest quote of the night. Elizabeth told me that Mark didn't know who Bruce Campbell was, so I called him on it and he said "isn't he a hockey player?" Yea. I almost died laughing! Gotta love it!
He sounded wonderful singing! still has a great voice! I hope to get together with him again soon. He's planning on moving to Ontario by the end of this year, but it's just across the river. Could prolly holler at him from Wyandotte's shores.
As Mark and his wife left, Fish, Julia and Zach came in. They had been haging down at the PRCU (as usual). fish sang he fabulous version on "Come Together" (which someday I'm going to record and YouTube and then the whole world can see how awesome she is) And I sang "Aenima" since Zach was there. I was getting pretty tipsy so I'm not sure of much else but I know Julia and Zach sang...OH! And Kevin sang "Sweet Transvestite"!!!!! And he wasn't too shabby either!!!
In short, had an awesome time hanging out with old friends. Can't wait to do it again!!
Gotta get going to sign some papers for the refi on our house, but look for part 3 coming your way soon.
Week in Review (part 1)
Where shall I begin? Well, first is that I got fired from hosting karaoke @ Shanahan's. Apparently they're changing flags from a Holiday Inn to a Radisson and as a result their entertainment budget was cut dramatically...only $300/month. Which means they can't afford us anymore every week. All available funds are headed towards other aspects to help covert the hotel by June.
(which btw I hate cuz Radissons aren't as plentiful as holiday inns which seriously cuts down on our available vacation spots with discounted hotel stays)
Ultimately my "boss" is happy about the cancellation. He was always calling me with some concern or another. And he always said how he hated working for the holiday inn anyway cuz he had bad experiences with the one in Southgate. And altho I'm going to miss the extra monies it gave us, I'm happy we aren't there anymore either. It was one big headache for me to hear how much of a headache it was for him. So I have my Tuesdays back! YAY!
~~~~~~~~~~~

Saturday was a hugely busy day. We went to the North American International Auto Show with Joel around 11 am for a couple hours. Ran into a friend that works sound for a local radio station. Joel got on the radio too. He had on his "Indiana Jones" hat so they started talking to him. He was so awesome. Just chit-chatting with them They talked to him about hybrids (since Joel has a Prius) and mentioned that someone they knew had a HOnda Insight (i hope I'm remembering this correctly) but had to trade it in cuz they have a fmaily and they just can't fit the kids in comfortably. Joel suggested perhaps they should just strap the kids to the top of the car....and the radio guys didn't quite know how to react to that one. It was hilarious!!!

The main reason we went to the Auto Show was to see the project that Joel is currently working on. The battery for the new GM Volt (which is an all electric concept car ... very cool!). The battery is going to be designed to run the entire length of the chassis.

We also saw a finished battery project in the Saturn Hybrid

Joel took a pic of him next to the battery pack but I haven't received his pics yet (*ahem*)

Of course we checked out the awesome cars...Lamborghini, Ferrarri, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Maserati, and the cool Bond BMW Z4 roadster. My favorite was the Rolls Royce 2008 Phantom with the brushed aluminum hood:

Click here for more hi-res pics

My favorite was the smartcar of course...which is NOT a play toy for Kohana and does NOT come with it's own Hot wheels track :p~ But besides the smartcar was the minicooper! it's SO CUTE! I got to sit in one and I loved it! And I believe they are slightly bigger this year. Joel got a pic of me in the car which I'll share once I get it.

After the Auto Show we came back home, Kevin went to work and Joel and I went out to lunch/dinner. We originially wanted Indian, but they closed 15 minutes before we got there, so we opted for the chinese buffet complete with sushi! YUM!

We spent a good amount of time there just chatting etc. He's been on a new diet prescribed by his physician and has lost 50lbs since October. I'm so impressed with him.

But I've already spent too much time on the puter. I have stuff I need to get done. So look for part 2 coming soon which includes joel's wedding plans, Saturday @ Somewhere and my take on the playoffs and upcoming Superbowl)
