Bee Season (possible spoilers sorry)

so i've been on a richard gere kick lately, watching movies he's been in that I haven't seen (thanks to the search option on my Directv dvr) and i found Bee Season.

the paragraph synopsis on screen said it was essentially about a movie about a man who becomes obsessed with his spelling bee champ daughter to the detrimental exclusion of the rest of his family (son and wife). Sounded kinda interesting. And I loved Akeelah and the Bee - so why not?

It was such a waste of 2 hours!!!!!

There was so much going on. And I see where they were trying to go with it. There were 3 storylines essentially. the man and his daughter...his wife who was going through stuff...and their son who was on a spiritual journey (they were Jewish).

It started out okay I guess. There were some odd parts where the mom had voice overs and it seemed to be veering from the central point of the film. I understand now why it was done (it enhances the mood that she's going crazy etc.) And i really thought the spiritual journey of the son was completely unnecessary. It didn't really add anything to the overall movie and it wasn't a defining moment in the family.

I did like the added layer of Jewish mysticism that coincided with the little girl's ability to spell and essentially have power of words. The dad was a Kabbalah professor and in his obsession with his daughter he tries to get her to find that intersection between words, letters and god. If they had focussed solely on that I think the movie would have been much better. I know the ending of the movie requires the mom subplot, but i think her story would have been better told separately. Maybe having the parents separate in the film would have been enough to motivate the girl in the ending.

All in all i really wasn't a big fan of it. It wasn't what I expected it to be. And what it was trying to be never fully fleshed itself out. A big disappointment imho.

1. hubby's brother sent me a text today that their mom is in the hospital. for which i am extremely grateful (even if hubby isn't talking to her right now) 

2. but then he also sent a picture of him, all the nephews and their DAD!!!!! I'm thinking he forgot he told us their dad died and hubby missed his funeral cuz i'm a bitch and stuff.

3. I really love Adam Lambert on American Idol! I thought his choice for Ring of Fire last week was brilliant and I also thought his choice to be respectful and clean up this week was brilliant! I'm really hoping he sticks around.

4. so happy The Woz is staying around another week on Dancing with the Stars. He's so frigging adorable!!! He can stay 1 more week (until Holly gets kicked off) and then he's gotta go cuz otherwise it will start messing with the people who can really dance and I'll get pissed at him.

5. Didn't get accepted to the Wyandotte Street fair proper, but we think we can get into the area btwn Elm and Maple on 1st street. *crossing fingers and toes*

6. Still not sure I'm willing to pay $150 for my 20 year reunion - we'll see.

7. and still pissed that the effort was made to start a group on FB and advances were made to discuss the details of the reunion, yet no dialogue was made. Just a couple people deciding on when and where and such. I just think that it should have been handled better. 10 years ago communication wasn't so simple, now it is. Wouldn't it be better to engage our fellow classmates - maybe some of them have connections to make things cheaper? Just a thought.

8. Going back to TV - I'm still unsure about the new show Dollhouse. I really liked last week's episode, but it's still growing on me.

9. On the other hand i *LOVE* castle w/ nathan Fillion - but then again i *heart* him so.

10. Working on getting more of my chainmaille stuff posted on etsy as well as making photo albums here and on FB so people can see what i spend my days doing.

11. In case you haven't been around me - the craft show during the St. Patty's Parade in Detroit sucked. I sold 1 pendant for $3. Most of the people inside the bldg didn't sell anything. But the people outside sold tons of their inventory. It reminded me of the Ecorse fesitval set up last year when we were put down an alley where people couldn't even see we were there. Live and learn i guess.

12. i know i've gone from blogging 265 to blogging not at all - I've been feeling like no one reads what I say anyway, so why bother.

13. Still haven't seen the Star trek exhibit here in the D - hoping to go soon!

14. can't wait until Drive-in season. I miss those nights out with my hubby.

15. Just watched an awesome movie on IFC - C.S.A. - The Confederate States of America. It was a "what if the south had won the war" movie done documentary style. It was offensive and funny and intelligent and witty and I absolutely loved it. I highly recommend it to everyone i know!!!

16. almost finished with my American flag afghan. Only 3 more striped to go. YAY!!!!

17. I still prefer myspace over FB - altho I like the birthday notifications better on FB, and I really wish myspace would get rid of all their apps.

18. My sleep schedule is all out of whack. I can't fall asleep sometimes until 8am and I'm sleeping until 4pm. I either need to sleep for 24 hours or stay awake for 24 hours - not sure which.

19. my cats are killing me now that spring is coming and they're starting to shed their fur.

20. have to end this so i can take a shower and get ready for darts tonight.
